The AI Mirage: How Professionals Misuse the Tool and How to Harness Its True Potential

As a product designer in Africa, navigating the intricate tussle between local needs and global opportunities, the promise of AI to streamline workflows and generate innovative solutions can be particularly alluring. However, as my recent article was undergoing review, the feedback from a friend served as a stark reminder: AI, wielded poorly, can lead us astray, producing generic, detached content that lacks the crucial elements of relatability, practical guidance, and personal experience.

One of the initial critiques of my article, “Solving Big Problems & Designing for Impact: Navigating Local Needs and Global Opportunities in the African Tech Landscape,” was its length and a tendency towards repetition. This is a common pitfall when relying too heavily on AI for content generation. While AI can efficiently synthesise information and generate text, it often lacks the nuanced understanding of pacing and conciseness that comes with human editorial oversight. The result can be an article that feels bloated and loses the reader’s attention.

The feedback highlighted a critical disconnect in tone and focus. The article, aiming to guide designers, inadvertently adopted the detached language of a scientific journal. This underscores a significant danger of over-relying on AI: it can produce technically sound but emotionally sterile content that fails to resonate with the intended audience.

Perhaps the most crucial feedback revolved around the “what” versus the “how.” The review rightly noted the abundance of abstract recommendations without concrete, actionable steps. This is where the limitations of generic AI-generated content become glaringly apparent. AI can tell you what designers should do — conduct user research, consider cultural context, aim for scalability — but it struggles to articulate how to do it effectively within the specific African landscape.

This leads directly to another critical point: the absence of personal experience and the suspicion of excessive AI reliance. The shift in writing style compared to my previous work raised a red flag, suggesting that the article leaned too heavily on AI-generated text, resulting in generic advice devoid of my unique perspective and hard-earned lessons.

How to Leverage AI More Effectively

The answer lies in treating AI as a powerful assistant, not a replacement for human ingenuity and experience:

  • Use AI for Structure and Initial Research: AI excels at quickly gathering information, outlining potential structures, and identifying key themes. Use it to build a framework for your content, but don’t let it dictate the narrative.

  • Infuse Your Unique Voice and Experience: Once you have a basic structure, fill it with your own stories, insights, and practical examples. Share how you’ve applied these principles in your work, the challenges you faced, and the lessons you learned.

  • Focus on Relatability and Audience: Remember who you are talking to. Use language that resonates with their experiences and challenges.

  • Seek Specificity Over Generality: Instead of broad statements, provide concrete examples and actionable steps.

  • Iterate and Refine with Human Feedback: Always seek feedback from peers and your target audience.

  • Treat AI as a Starting Point, Not the Final Product: Never submit or publish content solely generated by AI without significant human editing and personalisation.

In conclusion, AI holds immense potential to assist designers in their work. However, its power must be tempered with human wisdom, lived experience, and a deep understanding of the intended audience. Let us move beyond the AI mirage and embrace a future where technology amplifies, rather than replaces, the unique brilliance of human-centred design.
